iris yirei hu is an artist and educator who works with her hands to weave, tell stories, transform, dye, and compost her lived reality. She sees painting, weaving, natural indigo dyeing, collecting earthly specimens, and working with soil and fibers as ways to redeem the embodied intimacy we once had with the natural world.

My quilt square this year is all naturally dyed, with two eye pockets doubling as seed pods in which maiz seeds are contained. I was gifted these maiz seeds from visiting theh Crenshaw Dairy Mart’s abolitionist pod this morning and this year’s quilting theme is OUR ENVISIONED FUTURES. The eye pockets are indigo, of course, with the rest botanical prints of life from my yard and an ammonia-lichen overdye that I fermented for 4 months.
