Broken Cycle represents my need to acknowledge and release myself from toxic behaviors inherited from family & society. I made it thinking about prison abolition, harm reduction practices, familial cycles of abuse, and and the toxicity of whiteness. When I was making this square, I “had to” make and re-make it because there was an error in my seam allowances each time. I thought about making it a third time and remembered perfectionism doesn’t serve me, it only serves whiteness, and isn’t something I want to bring with me into the future. The square is made from 100% cotton gifted to me by an elder who can no longer quilt.
