Laura DeVeber

Laura look straight at the camera. She has glasses and wears a gray t-shirt. Behind her are thick-pieces of colorful yarn on a white background.

My mom taught me how to sew when I was a kid, a skill that sparked an interest in textile art, particularly knitting. I am a scenic carpenter by trade and my primary art form is actually music performing mostly in punk/hardcore bands.

Let’s Play (2023)

I created an imaginary world on my quilt square using applique. Creating a world of make believe allows us pleasure of escaping the real world and the joy of exploring new spaces, but this world of play also gives us a safe space to process our emotions and trauma.

Neon Ruins (2022)

Neon colors are my favorite! Thinking a lot about collective memory encapsulating the complexity of overlapping and conflicting experiences, I chose a interrupted zig zag pattern with repetition of colors to challenge the idea that time moves linearly or simply. Included in the square is hand knit lace and yarn scraps.

I believe our best future will not be created in isolation and we all have so much to learn from each other. This inspired me to practice leaving my comfort zone and seek out help within my community to learn a new skill: natural dyeing. (Thank you Lauren Corden! IG: lcor) In addition to a yellow onion dye with alum mordant, I also used my homemade vinegar/steelwool wood stain to experiment on fabric. I also incorporated a knit square of free form color pattern in the spirit of letting go of control in the face of unpredictability and adversity. To be included in and share this project with so many amazing artists has been a privilege.
